Natrona County Public Library
The Natrona County Public Library System traces its origins to a reading room established and operated by the Women's Christian Temperance Union in 1902. By 1919 there were 850 books on the shelves and 200 borrowers. In 1929, the library was designated a Selective Depository for government documents in the Federal Depository Library Program. The present facility consists of two wings, the east wing that opened in 1954 as an addition to the Carnegie building, and the main wing, built in 1972, replacing the Carnegie Library entirely. Total area is roughly ---30,000 sf. A renovation of public spaces was completed in 1998.
This library is the central facility associated with the library system that serves Natrona County. The collection of the library contains 200,000 volumes. The library circulates 220,000 items per year. The library serves a population of 68,211 residents.
Business Challenge
The public library of the 21st Century is in the process of being redefined by technology. New and emerging technologies offer new ways to deliver information content as well as new, more effective ways to manage collections and other resources. The public’s perception of their local library is increasingly being shaped by the technologies that are offered. The Natrona County Public Library wants to be seen by the people of Natrona County as an organization that is technologically advanced and that has harnessed advanced technologies for their use and benefit. In order to do this, the Library must continuously monitor, adopt, and adapt the technologies that have the greatest potential for serving the public effectively and efficiently.
